A poem on professional life, delivered appointment of the Society of Phi Beta Kappa, at their anniversary, August 29, 1811. Boston, Published J. Belcher. 1811 15 p.; 24 cm. These poems and others were collected in 1867 in a volume entitled " May Day and Other Pieces." In i866 Emerson received the degree of LL.D. From Harvard University, and in 1867 he was elected to their board of overseers. In the same year he delivered an oration on the Progress of Culture before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Cambridge. He was educated at Harvard and was especially noted there for his proficiency in the classic languages. He returned to Charleston, where he was admitted to the bar, and became a leading lawyer and legislator. He was always a ready and convincing speaker. In 1817 he delivered the Phi Beta Kappa address at Harvard. Two controversial public addresses at Harvard accelerated his rise as a public figure; these remain among his best known and most enduring cultural legacies.
